What is a Forward Deployed Engineer?

EU AI Jobs ·

You may have seen this job title on a careers page and wondered what it means. It sounds military. It isn't. Here is the simple version.

The short answer

A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works directly with a customer to make a product actually work for them.

Most engineers build a product for thousands of users at once. An FDE takes that product to one customer, sits with their team, and builds whatever is missing until the customer gets real results.

Why "forward deployed"?

The name comes from the military idea of sending people "forward", out to where the action is, instead of keeping them at headquarters. In a company, headquarters is the main engineering team. "Forward" is the customer's office, their systems, their messy data. An FDE works out there.

A simple example

Imagine an AI company that sells a tool for reading documents. A large insurance company buys it to process claims. The tool works well in a demo. But the insurer's claims are scanned PDFs, written in three languages, stored in a 20-year-old system.

So the AI company sends an FDE, who:

A few weeks later, the insurer processes claims with AI.

  2. Comfort without a clear spec: no two customers are the same.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Forward Deployed Engineer a software engineer?

Yes. FDEs write and ship code. What sets them apart is where they work: alongside one customer, rather than on the core product for everyone.

What is the difference between a Forward Deployed Engineer and a solutions engineer?

A solutions engineer usually helps before a customer buys, with demos and technical questions. An FDE usually comes after, and stays until the product works in the customer's own systems.

Do Forward Deployed Engineers travel?

Often: many FDE roles involve time at the customer's offices. Some are remote, and the job ad says which.

Which companies hire Forward Deployed Engineers?

The role started at Palantir. Today AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic hire FDEs, along with many AI startups.
