An AI scene spread across the country

Germany's AI sits in several cities rather than one. DeepL builds its translation models in Cologne, Black Forest Labs its image models in Freiburg, and Aleph Alpha is based in Heidelberg, while Berlin and Munich have the most AI roles.

Research follows the same pattern. Six AI competence centres funded by the federal research ministry anchor it: BIFOLD in Berlin, MCML in Munich, ScaDS.AI in Dresden and Leipzig, the Tübingen AI Center, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and the Lamarr Institute. The Hightech Agenda Deutschland, adopted in July 2025, aims for 10% of economic output to be AI-based by 2030 and for at least one EU AI Gigafactory to be built in Germany.

Moving to Germany as an AI engineer

With an EU or EEA passport, you can start work straight away. Most others come on the EU Blue Card, and IT is one of its shortage occupations: in 2026 an IT role qualifies from €45,934.20 a year, and an IT specialist without a degree can qualify with three years of IT experience in the last seven.

If you would rather find the job once you are in Germany, the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) lets you stay for up to a year to look for one, with trial work or a side job of up to 20 hours a week while you search.

What tech pays in Germany

In April 2025, full-time employees in information and communication earned €6,141 gross a month on average, against €4,784 across all sectors (Federal Statistical Office). Each role on this page shows its salary where the employer states one.
