Supercomputing in Barcelona, AI in Spain's languages

Spain's Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2024, approved in May 2024, put €1.5 billion into AI for 2024 and 2025. It includes ALIA, a family of language models for Spanish and Spain's co-official languages, and €90 million for the MareNostrum supercomputer at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center.

In December 2024 Spain's first AI factory, worth €61.76 million, was assigned to the same centre in Barcelona. On the north coast, Multiverse Computing, registered in Donostia-San Sebastián, develops CompactifAI, its technology for compressing AI models.

With an EU, EEA or Swiss passport, you work in Spain on the same terms as Spaniards. Others most often come on the EU Blue Card: since January 2026 it needs €41,356.36 gross a year, and €33,085.09 for shortage occupations and for qualifications from the last three years.
