A national AI law and €1 billion for startups

Law 132 of 2025 on artificial intelligence has been in force since 10 October 2025, with a €1 billion programme for startups and small and medium-sized businesses. It follows the Italian Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2024–2026, which works in four areas: research, public administration, business and training.

Milan and Bologna

Milan is home to Google's Italian office and to Domyn, the AI company formerly called iGenius. In Bologna, the IT4LIA AI factory is coordinated by CINECA at the Bologna Tecnopolo data centre.

An EU Blue Card outside the quotas

With an EU passport, you need no work permit. From outside the EU, the EU Blue Card is issued outside the yearly work quotas, for a job offer of at least six months paying no less than the national collective agreement and the average gross salary measured by ISTAT. Every employee is entitled to at least four weeks of paid leave a year.
