London's AI labs

Google DeepMind lists London among its locations and has moved teams into Platform 37 at King's Cross. Anthropic's London office is one of six it has in Europe, and Faculty works from Old Street. The government also runs the AI Security Institute, a research organisation within the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.

Beyond London, the government's AI Opportunities Action Plan, published in January 2025 with 50 recommendations, is backed by AI Growth Zones in Oxfordshire, the North East, North Wales, South Wales and Scotland.

Visas that suit AI engineers

The Global Talent visa for digital technology needs no job offer. It is for leaders and potential leaders in technical roles, such as developers, engineers and data scientists, endorsed by Tech Nation or holding an eligible prize, and can be granted for up to five years at a time.

If you graduated from an eligible university outside the UK in the last five years, the High Potential Individual visa lets you work for two years, three with a PhD, and you can switch to a Skilled Worker visa once an employer sponsors you.

What tech pays in the UK

Full-time programmers and software development professionals earned a median of £59,863 a year in the ONS's provisional 2026 figures, against £40,911 for all full-time employees, with 28 days of paid holiday a year on a five-day week.
